I've always dreamed of living in the world. In public school, I gravitated toward books on travel to exotic places, especially port cities. Over the years, I've relished watching container ships coming in and going out of the ports of the world's great cities, whether it was off of South Beach, Miami sitting in the sand; in the Davao Gulf, the Philippines, from Santa Ana Pier; in the old Omani harbor in Muttrah while sipping espresso shots outside a cafe or walking on the Kowloon side promenade of Victoria Harbor looking across it at Hong Kong Island. I'd smile and say to myself: "I did it."
The world called for me, and I went. I've lived continuously outside the United States since 2000. While I've had many great cultural experiences and seen awesome things, I was surprised to discover many insights to our common problems while meeting my own challenges of living, working and traveling globally. The good news is that we have choices of solutions which can be highly positive, inspiring and liberating.
